Notes on motion timing

Most animation that feels wrong is not badly eased. It is the wrong length, or it starts at the wrong moment.

Most animation that feels wrong is not badly eased. It is the wrong length, or it starts at the wrong moment.

Length

An interface response should be under two hundred milliseconds or it stops feeling like a response. An ambient loop can take as long as it likes, provided nothing is waiting for it.

Delay

Staggering a list makes it read as one thing arriving rather than six. Past about sixty milliseconds per item it reads as a queue instead, and people start waiting for the end.

Respecting the setting

If someone has asked their operating system to reduce motion, honour it. That usually means removing the loops and keeping the state changes, not removing everything.
